Logan Gurley drowned Monday at Pitcairn Park in Tega Cay.

A Fort Mill teen was identified as the victim of Monday’s drowning at Pitcairn Park in Tega Cay.

Logan Gurley, 16, was found underwater while swimming with friends. Crews were called to the park on Triton Drive around 4 p.m. Monday to look for a swimmer who was missing.

“He was recovered by Charlotte Fire who responded by boat but was unable to be resuscitated,” Coroner Sabrina Gast said in a press release. “Investigation is still ongoing with Tega Cay Police and the York County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy and toxicology are pending.”

Gurley was a well-known athlete at Fort Mill High School, listed as 6’4” tall and a player on the school’s basketball team. Friends say he moved from New York City as a youth.

“Logan was a bright light in our community, known for his kind spirit and infectious smile,” the mayor wrote. “During this incredibly difficult time, we are coming together to support the Gurley family.”

  1. This is the 8th Black Boy that has drowned in Tega Cay while hanging out with White friends, within the past ten years. Seems to be a pattern that Tega Cay is keeping quite 🤔

    1. Black kids drown because they aren’t taught to swim as young kids. Facts. End of story

      1. Jennifer Codey, you are quite literally the scum of the Earth, I can not imagine a more pathetic thing to say and you have just embarrassed yourself by proving you know nothing about the situation and just wanted an excuse to push your racist propaganda, if you took 5 minutes to look into the story you would actually learn that Logan was a capable swimmer and that him being able to swim was not the issue so please keep your racist opinions to your disgusting self.

    2. In the last 4 years athletes have been having heart attacks because of the vaccine young healthy athletes teenagers young adults soccer players runners… People are dropping dead like flies. Now I have no idea whether this young man took the vaccine or not but if he didn’t my guess would be that it was due to the amount of boats and exhaust on the water as I have seen lots of accidental drownings of very good swimmers because of poisoning.

    3. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, you don’t know 10% of the story and you are on here speculating about some race BS, not everything is about race, get off the internet and go outside for once and maybe you’ll learn to develop empathy for a family that has just lost their son.

  3. If you don’t know the situation, you shouldn’t comment. Guesses about it being vaccine related, race related, or boat exhaust related are just that…guesses. Just because you “think” something doesn’t mean it’s a “fact”.

  4. Here is a fact:
Swimming is a sport that is not as ingrained in Black communities as it is in white communities in the United States. According to a 2021 USA Swimming report, only 1.4% of their over 200,000 year-round swimmers identified as Black or African American. A 2021 study by the USA Swimming Foundation and the University of Memphis found that 64% of Black children cannot swim, compared to 40% of Caucasian children. Black people also make up only 8.9% of swimmers in the US, while 72.8% of regular swimmers are white.
No conspiracy theory to kill black kids as Eugene the troll eludes to.
No boat fumes as it is a low use boat launch. I won’t even comment on the other bizarre suggestions. Maybe toxicology will suggest different but in the meantime how about some compassion for the family. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

    1. Robert, I appreciate your kindness towards the family but Logan was actually a very capable swimmer so something else was the issue here.

  5. Bill, your son was a magnificent person, personality, & athlete as well. You always would talk about him & his achievements every time I saw you. A good talent, but a greater young man was lost. My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family.
