Two Fort Mill police officers caught a sex-crime suspect with drugs on him at the S.C. Strawberry Festival over the weekend, according to a police report.

The officers were patrolling the festival around 4:15 p.m. Saturday and recognized Dalton Ray Wright in the crowd. The officers – who are identified in a report as Officers Kelly and Eaches – remembered that the Fort Mill resident had an active warrant for criminal sexual conduct with a minor from Lancaster County. So they detained him.

“While speaking with Wright, Officer Eaches could smell an odor of marijuana coming from Wright’s cheetah print book bag,” a FMPD report says. “Wright stated that he had THC vials in the book bag and possibly some marijuana in his pocket.”

Wright, 20, of the 1600 block of Old Nation Ford Road, was cited by Fort Mill police with simple possession of marijuana. Officers later drove him to Lancaster County and turned him over to a sheriff’s deputy to face the sex charge.

Authorities say Wright allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old girl earlier this year in Lancaster County, leading to the charge. The young man has a long list of felony drug charges from 2018 that are pending with the York County Sheriff’s Office, according to online court records. He also has a conviction for shoplifting as a teenager when he spent four days in jail.
