The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been requested by Sheriff Kevin Tolson to investigate a death of a York County Detention Center inmate.

Around 8:15 p.m. Monday, detention officers discovered a male inmate unresponsive in a cell in the booking area. Immediately officers rendered aid and performed CPR until Emergency Medical Services arrived, according to PIO Trent Faris. The inmate was taken to Piedmont Medical Center, where he later died.

This inmate was arrested and placed into custody of the York County Detention Center at around 1:15 a.m. Monday, Faris said.

“This inmate was screened for COVID-19 at intake and showed no signs related to the COVID-19 virus,” Faris said. “Further details about the inmate or cause of death are not available until the investigation is complete.”
