Hazel Frick

Veteran teacher Hazel Frick pledges to listen and be approachable if elected to the Fort Mill School Board.

She is one of three newcomers who have filed to run for three available seats on the school board this year. The other new candidates are Dr. Nichell Newton and Desareta Jones. Trustees Kristy Spears and Dr. Scott Frattaroli have also filed for re-election. Trustee Tom Audette is stepping down as he runs for York County Council.

Frick taught in district schools for 36 years. Her children graduated from Fort Mill Schools and she still has a vested interest since she has a grandson in a district school with two other grandkids right behind him.

Frick said she wants to represent children, teachers and parents. She said safety is at the front of everyone’s minds and she can relate to the frustration after spending decades in the classroom.

“I have sat on all sides of the educational table, as a teacher, a parent and now as a grandparent,” she told the Fort Mill Sun. “I very much want to see our district continue to provide quality education to every child, regardless of their ability and whether in school or virtually schooled.”

Frick, who grew up in West Virginia, graduated from Winthrop University with a BS in Elementary Education and an MA in Reading. She has lived in Fort Mill for almost 40 years.

She has served on school curriculum boards and has written math, language arts and social studies curriculum. Frick served as a mentor teacher for numerous Winthrop interns, been a representative on school improvement councils, led as a grade level chairman, and volunteered on district and school interview teams. She also taught several workshops on writing, spelling and social studies.

“If elected, I want to be an efficient steward of district’s funds, a representative that is approachable and will listen to the people that elected me,” Frick said. “And will always strive to keep children first!”

The nonpartisan race will go to voters on the Nov. 3. ballot.
