The Fort Mill Police Department said Wednesday that they incorrectly identified a juvenile sex victim as a boy in a police report.

Kevin Douglas Wilford, 50, is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old female on Feb. 8, according to Fort Mill Police Maj. Bryan Zachary.

The assault was reported the next day and on Feb. 13, the child was given a “forensic interview,” a structured conversation designed to obtain information from the child.

A police report, provided this week to the Fort Mill Sun, listed Wilford as 40 years old and the victim as a male. Maj. Zachary said that was incorrect.

“The initial recorder made the mistake, and that information was carried over to the report,” he said by email.

The report does not indicate how the suspect knows the victim. Wilford surrendered Monday to face charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He bonded out the same day.
