Several loads from the last recycling week in the Town of Fort Mill were rejected by the county after improper items were found inside.

That’s why city officials are spot-checking recycling carts this week. They sent out this press release:

The Town of Fort Mill would like to remind recycling customers about the types of items that can and cannot be placed inside their recycling carts. Fort Mill has contracted to collect all recyclables from our residents and deliver them to the York County Public Works Recycling Center, which has strict guidelines on what can be collected and processed at that facility. Several loads from the last recycling week were rejected by the facility after improper items were found inside. As a result, those loads were instead taken to a landfill. (Story continues below)

To make sure this does not happen again, Public Works crews are out spot-checking recycling carts this week and hanging cards on carts found to have improper items inside, including plastic bags, household trash in bags, glass bottles and any plastic containers that are not jugs, jars or bottles. Please remember not to include trash in recycling carts.

“Recycling is important to all of us, so it is imperative that we place only recyclable materials in our recycling carts and avoid this material from ending up in a landfill,” said Fort Mill Town Manager Davy Broom.

Please see the included photos for items that caused the recent recycling load to be rejected, and also take a look at our flyers describing the items that can and cannot be placed inside the carts. We have also included an example of the hanging cards being placed on recycling carts this week. If you have any questions, please contact the town’s Public Works Department at (803) 547-7158.
