The Fort Mill School district has closed all schools on Thursday because of a major water main break in Rock Hill.

Also, all Fort Mill Parks & Recreation practices and games have been cancelled through Thursday, Oct. 10. All town park restrooms are closed until further notice and drinking fountains should NOT be used.

On the school front, a phone message to parents says that the district is taking the advice of York County Emergency Management in closing on Thursday. The water main break would impact bathroom use and potable water.

The cancellation impacts all after-school activities and all district facilities.

Because of the missed day, students will have to attend on the next available make-up day, which is Friday, Oct. 18.

Full statement from FMSD:

The Fort Mill School District has been advised by York County Emergency Management that the recent water main break has caused significant disruptions to the water service at our schools for an extended period of time.

These interruptions in service will impact the use of restroom facilities and potable drinking water. York County Emergency Management has recommended that we close school facilities tomorrow, Thursday, October 10 as a result of this issue.

Following this recommendation all schools and district facilities will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, October 10. This includes the cancellation of all after school activities.

If any further changes to the school day for the remainder of the week are needed, we will notify our community once they are determined. The district will use the makeup day scheduled for Friday, October 18, to recover this lost time.

Fort Mill residents are part of a boil-water advisory that went out to the county after a major water main broke Wednesday at a water filter plant on Cherry Road in Rock Hill.

A 24-inch water main broke there, leaving some residents with low water pressure and opening the possibility to contaminated water. Municipal water customers, including Fort Mill customers, are asked to reduce water use as much as possible while crews work to isolate the problem.

The Fort Mill School District says they are monitoring the situation before making any announcement about the schools.

“(We) will announce any changes to the school day once they are determined,” spokesman Joe Burke said by text.

The Town of Fort Mill’s Parks & Recreation Department made several closures and cancellations due to the water main break in Rock Hill. Softball games being played this evening at Cherry Park in Rock Hill were cancelled. Harris Street Park, Doby’s Bridge Park and Steele Street Park bathroom facilities were closed until further notice.

Fort Mill buys its water from Rock Hill, which draws the water from Lake Wylie.

Instructions for purifying water by boiling are available on the SCDHEC website at https://www.scdhec.gov/disaster-prep…/boil-water-emergencies.
