A frequently-used road was shut down to traffic Monday in Fort Mill as state transportation workers begin nine-month bridge repair.

Detour signs popped up Monday, rerouting traffic on Old Nation Road as transportation workers start to replace the Steele Creek bridge that is over 50 years old.

The road, also known as 21 Business, will only be open to local traffic until next May, when the bridge is expected to be complete. That should cause traffic problems to only worsen as Fort Mill handles a massive growth in population, new residential homes and the resulting traffic.
