A Fort Mill man accidentally shot himself in the leg this week while fiddling with a gun, according to a sheriff’s report.

Wayne Lee Newhart, 35, of the 200 block of Henry Street, told authorities that he was standing inside his room with a friend Wednesday night and was “fiddling with the firearm.” He said he picked the gun up and accidentally shot himself in the leg.

“His friend John left the scene with the firearm immediately after Newhart was shot,” a report says.

Other people in the residence heard the gunshot and went to the room, where they saw Newhart moaning in pain. They helped him onto the floor and found a belt to put above his injury as a make-shift tourniquet.

Newhart was taken by ambulance to CMC Main in Charlotte, a report says. Sheriff’s investigators arrived to investigate and seized the .38-caliber bullet casing as evidence.

No charges have been announced, and the report labels the incident as an “accidental shooting.”
